Emmie watched Finn and Sarah’s expression as they headed into the theater. Her friends had the same wide-eyed sense of wonder that she had experienced after entering the place days earlier. Pausing a moment to let them take in the rich Art Deco themes that filled every corner of the theater, Emmie gestured ahead toward the stage. “We should be alone, for now. Marty, the prop master, should be the only one here, but he’s behind the stage in his workshop. Nova and Trick won’t be in until later, but we don’t have much time.”

Jason had gone ahead of them and now stood on stage, making a little gesture with his head to let them know everything was clear.

Operating again as a team felt empowering, although Emmie had hoped her friends’ first day in Vegas would have gone a lot smoother. Getting Finn and Sarah up to speed regarding everything they had discovered in the last two days would prove difficult because of what had happened between them and Nova.

They moved quickly down the aisle toward the stage, their footsteps echoing throughout the old theater. Emmie led the way, and she scanned the area for signs of anything unusual.

“We have permission to be in the theater, right?” Finn asked.

“Nobody kicked us out… yet,” Emmie said. “And they’re very aware we’re still here.”

“Have you seen any spirits?” Sarah asked.

“One, a magician, but he wasn’t violent. Others are here… somewhere.” Emmie stared at the silent darkness behind the open velvet curtains. “Let me know if you experience anything unusual, but I believe Trick is the biggest danger to Nova.”

Making their way around to the backstage area, they met up with Jason who kept glancing back toward the prop room. “If Marty comes out, no need to pretend what we’re doing, but keep things close to the chest at this point. I don’t trust anyone.”

Passing under the heavy velvet curtains that loomed around them like a dark wave, a ghostly quiet settled over them as the echoes of the theater faded away. They moved between the stacks of light rigging, tables, and stage sets used by both magicians in their shows.

Finn stopped near a tall set of black cabinets and placed his suitcase-sized silver camera case on the ground. “I’m setting up the equipment here.”

Emmie looked up toward the stage rigging. “Try to catch him messing with Nova’s props. The ones over there.”

Finn followed her gaze. “Plenty of angles to work with. I’m confident if Trick tries anything, we’ll record it.”

Sarah was quiet after Finn started to unpack his camera equipment. Her eyes scanned the area like she could feel something lurking around them. She rubbed her arms, as if trying to warm herself up. “Do you feel that?”

Emmie shot her a quick glance, but kept her focus on the task at hand. “I felt them, but they don’t come out. If you see any…”

“I’ll let you know.”

Turning her focus back to Finn, she watched him assemble the cameras and step around the stage, peering back at them from different angles.
